A Soshanguve club DJ narrowly escaped death when armed men opened fire on his car on Tuesday morning.
DJ Faizel Ngwenya was driving home from Short Left in Soshanguve where he had been playing overnight.
He said as he drove past the local graveyard near block VV around 03:00, a white Toyota Etios blocked the road.
“Two men got out of the car, one flashed a torch at me. Then the men took out pistols and started shooting. I accelerated towards them and managed to get past their car. They continued to shoot as I was driving off,” he said.

He said one bullet bounced off the bonnet and another hit his windscreen.
“Two hit the front passenger window, and four left holes in the back of the car,” he said.
The still traumatised DJ told Rekord he did not know what the motive was.
“I do not know what they wanted. I think if they would not have opened fire at the car if they wanted to hijack me,” he said.
“I drove off and headed off to my home. They never followed me. I later went to the police station to open a case of attempted murder as well as malicious damage to property. Police said they would also consider adding a possible attempted hijacking case,” he said.
He said he was with his friend’s partner in the car when the shooting occurred. He said club DJs always had to work late and should receive police protection.

Police spokesperson Constable Zanele Mtsweni said an investigation was underway and confirmed there were signs on the car it had been shot at several times.
She said the two occupants escaped without injury.
“Only the car was damaged,” police confirmed.
