Theft of water meters rife in the east

Last month, a man was arrested after he was found in possession of three water meters.

There has been a spate of theft of water meters in Faerie Glen in the past two weeks.

According to resident Debbie Henderson, a total of nine water meters were reported stolen in the area, causing damage and extensive water loss in some households.

“It is becoming a bit problematic these days with the winter approaching. Once it gets darker, they [thieves] operate between 18:00-19:00,” Henderson said.

Fidelity ADT community development manager Bennie Coetzee, earlier said the thieves were after copper in the meters.

“The valuable components were usually sold including the other material on the meter,” he said.

Coetzee advised residents to always be on the look-out for suspicious people.

Last month, a man was arrested after he was found in possession of three water meters in Lynnwood Glen.

“Who knows how many more meters this suspect would have got away with. This incident also shows how effective CCTV can be in a residential area,” Coetzee said.

Garfontein police spokesperson Captain Ilze Jones could not be reached for comment.
