North sewerage mess due to ‘faulty equipment’

"The original installation at Shawu Estate was not properly done."

The on-and-off water leak in a Nina Park estate north of Pretoria has been a headache for residents for the past eight years.

“I have had burst pipes in front of my yard every six months for eight years,” Shawu Estate resident Maud Swart said.

The despondent resident told Rekord that although the city attended to the leak, the problem kept recurring.

“Every three to six months, the water pipe bursts in my or my neighbour’s yard and on average we wait at least four to six weeks before the problem is attended to.

“I have sent endless emails and made countless phone calls.”

Swart spoke about the damage the leak and some of the repair work had caused to her yard and her concern about the damage the water could cause to her house’s structure.

“My yard is a mess – plants ripped out, garden sprinklers destroyed and mud up to my front door,” she said.

“There is now a hole in my driveway and water is still streaming into my garden. On previous occasions, the water also streamed into my pool.

“I am sure in future this will cause structural problems to my house.”

She said she was considering leaving the estate.

“I am thinking of selling my home,” she said.

Tshwane MMC for services and infrastructure Darryl Moss confirmed he knew about the ongoing problem.

Moss said the problem lay with the original installation of water pipes at the estate.

“The main issue is that the original installation at Shawu Estate was not properly done and this has resulted in ongoing leakage problems. It is a fairly large repair project.

“The city is working on it.”
