Damaged mini-substation replaced in Refilwe Ext 1
Electricity supply has been restored to residents of Refilwe Ext 1 after the metro replaced a mini-substation that was found to be damaged beyond repair.
The Tshwane Metro has restored electricity supply to affected consumers in Refilwe Ext 1 following the replacement of a mini-substation.
The intervention came after the city detected a suspected fault on the transformer at the mini-substation, prompting its technical testing team to assess the equipment and establish the cause of the outage.
According to the metro, tests confirmed the transformer was damaged beyond repair, making it necessary to replace the entire mini-substation.
MMC for Utility Services Frans Boshielo said the replacement forms part of the city’s broader efforts to strengthen the electricity network and improve the reliability of supply.
Following the technical assessment, a replacement mini-substation was delivered to the site. The damaged unit was safely decommissioned and removed before the new unit was installed.
The replacement was then tested, commissioned and energised, allowing electricity supply to be fully restored to all affected consumers in Refilwe Ext 1.
Boshielo said the metro is also engaging Eskom regarding bulk power supply requirements as part of efforts to strengthen the electricity network and increase capacity in Refilwe.
“This intervention forms part of the metro’s broader Electricity Stabilisation Plan, which prioritises the replacement and strengthening of critical electricity infrastructure, addresses capacity constraints and improves the reliability and resilience of the municipal electricity network,” said Boshielo.
He said the city is committed to responding to infrastructure failures while also implementing longer-term measures to improve electricity supply.
Boshielo thanked the residents for their patience and co-operation, while the restoration work was carried out.
He said the metro will continue working with residents, technical teams and other stakeholders to strengthen electricity infrastructure and improve service delivery across the city.
