Delight at police gift in Moot
“They were so happy about the books that they immediately tried to open all of them all at once.”
Delight has greeted a recent police gift of books to schoolchildren in Pretoria.
“They were so happy they immediately tried to open all the books at once,” said Villieria police spokesperson Captain Coba Brits.
Villieria police officers handed over the English-medium books to Nellie Swart and Booysens primary schools.
Members of Doulos Charity were partners in the donation to the schools in the west and Moot of Pretoria.
Brits said: “When I got the children ready for the photograph, I could not believe what happened.
“They were laughing and showing each other pictures and explaining to each other what the book is about.”
Brits said this gave her a clear indication that children were in dire need of books.
“I want to thank everybody that donated books to this cause. We do not understand how small things we take for granted could make others so happy,” she said.

“We as a community need to keep our children safe and what better way than to keep them occupied with a book.”
The police urged schools to promote safety among learners and to ask their nearest police station for help when it was needed.
“By education and conveying information, children and teachers can be made aware of crime in their area and how to prevent it from happening,” she said.
Brits said Laerskool Nellie Swart used to be an Afrikaans medium school.
The school was established in 1975 and in 2005 it started with its first English medium class.
“Due to the number of learners who were English speaking, the school is now an English medium school,” she said.
Laerskool Booysens falls in the Tshwane West Cluster.
“The school opened its doors in 1974 with 26 pupils in 2007 it started with dual medium education,” Brits said.
“Today there are 27 English and six Afrikaans speaking classes.”
She said 1250 pupils were being accommodated from the neighbouring areas.
Two hundred pupils are also receiving food on a daily basis.
“Most of the families in this area are experiencing financial strain and all departments must help each other to the benefit of our children,” Brits said.
Tips for children to protect themselves:
– Be aware of your surroundings and the people around you.
– Know the emergency numbers.
– Avoid talking to strangers.
– Avoid displaying valuables where criminals can see them.
– Avoid walking around at night. Try to always walk in groups.
– Keep your cellphone away from public view.
