UPDATE: Second fatality in north plane crash not passenger

According to the Civil Aviation Authority there were three people on the ground that were injured when the plane crashed.

The SA Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has confirmed that the second person to die in the north airplane crash, was not a passenger.

Spokesperson Kabelo Ledwaba said three people “on the ground” were injured in the accident – it was one of them that had since died.

The Convair 340, manufactured by General Dynamics, crashed east of  Moloto Road on Tuesday.

It had taken off from Wonderboom national airport en route to Pilanesberg.

In a statement, the CAA said 19 people were on board – 16 passengers and three  crew.

Pretoria resident Chris Barnard was the first fatality on the scene while the rest of the people were transported to various hospitals.

Ledwaba said the second victim died on Wednesday morning.

A building on a dairy farm was severely damaged when the plane crashed into it.

Moorddrift Dairy CEO Stephen Smit said  his two workers who were in the building at the time of the accident were seriously injured.

The identity of this second fatality is unknown.

“The investigation is still at an early stage and therefore some details are yet to be verified,” the CAA said.

“An appeal is made to all stakeholders concerned, to give the investigating team the space and time to thoroughly investigate the cause of the accident.”
