The state is expected to lead evidence in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Friday on why it opposes bail for the Brooklyn man accused of the murder of his wife.
Prem Emmanuel Basdeo (58) faces charges of murder, perjury and defeating the ends of justice for his alleged involvement in his wife Dawn Basdeo’s disappearance the state believes is murder though her body is yet to be found.

Dawn (57) went missing on 8 June on her way to hospital.
Basdeo later reported her missing but the police claim to have sufficient reason to believe he murdered her.
Giving evidence at the start of his bail application Basdeo insisted he didn’t and was in fact also searching for her.
He asked the court to let him go on bail so he could continue the search and manage his businesses.
“I deny that I murdered my wife. I do not know where my wife is and don’t know whether she is dead or alive,” he said.
Basdeo said his wife’s disappearance had weighed heavily on him and keeping him in custody would cause him “further emotional pain”.
