VIDEO: Environment minister described as ‘matriarch of the people’
The 61-year-old environmental minister died following complications from Legionnaires’ disease in a Pretoria hospital earlier this year.
Environmental Affairs minister Edna Molewa was described as a champion for women and the downtrodden at her memorial service today.
“She always emptied herself for a cause, even if it meant dragging her family in,” said basic education minister Angie Motshekga.

Motshekga added that she would miss her ‘ngwana omo golo’s’ (big girl – as they referred to each other).
“I will miss how we would play music loudly, laugh and talk at the Zion Christian Church, even though we were not even baptized members,” she said.
Molewa’s daughter, Keneilwe Mogosoa, said she would miss the time she spent with her mother.
Minister Naledi Pandor, who also spoke at the memorial service, said Molewa had “done her part”.
“You did what you had to do, rest in peace.”
The 61-year-old Molewa passed away on 22 September 2018 following complications from Legionnaires’ disease in a Pretoria hospital.

She was survived by her four children, three grandchildren, mother and six siblings.
It is understood she will receive an official funeral at the weekend.
