East learner bags pair of trophies at maths olympiad
Amogelang Motileng (13) said he wanted to work hard to secure a bursary to continue his studies.
A Grade 7 Boikgantsho Primary School learner in Mamelodi East has won two trophies for her performance at a maths olympiad.
Amogelang Motileng (13) of Section 16 won two trophies and certificates in the competition’s Circuit 5 level scoring among the topping learners in her grade in Mamelodi, later district and then Tshwane South.
His maths teacher Patronella Phasha said Amogelang was a hardworking and committed learner.
“A learner who can think creatively and critically who can find the solution to problems. And always takes responsibility for his own learning,” said Phasha.
“He always answers tricky questions in class but a hard-working child and always helping his fellow classmates.”
Amogelang said he loved maths and wanted to be a chartered accountant.

He said he wanted to work hard to secure a bursary to continue his studies because “my mother is a single unemployed parent, she won’t have the money for university.”
He said he wanted to work hard so he could support his mother and younger brother.
Phasha, who also received a certificate, said she noticed that Amogelang did very well at maths at the beginning of the year so she gave him extra textbooks to practise at home.
She encouraged her fellow colleagues to always work hard and always guide learners with pride, honour and dignity.
“Learners need to be motivated and once they are made to believe in themselves. They will be able to overcome the fears for maths.”
Principal Vusi Khumalo said it was a great honour to have such great teacher and in the mathematics, natural sciences and technology department head at the school.
He further said he was proud of Amogelang for making the school proud by progressing to the provincial championship, where he came third.
“The school is proud of the educator and the learners and wished all of them the best and they must continue to keep up the good work.”
The school awarded Amogelang a stationery prize for making the school proud.
