UPDATE: Eersterust twins jailed for murder of pensioner, theft

Elmyra Wathen (72) was stabbed and killed by one of the twins during a house robbery two years ago.

Twin brothers from Eersterust involved in the murder of a 72-year-old pensioner more than two years ago have been sentenced.

Elmyra Wathen was brutally stabbed and killed by one of the twins at her residence on 26 October 2016 in Eersterust during a house robbery.

The twin brothers, Fortune and Francis McDonald, entered into a plea bargain with the state and the 24-year-old Francis pleaded guilty for murdering Wathen, police spokesperson Sergeant Sam Shibambo said.

“She (Wathen) was finally able to get her justice,” he said.

Shibambo said that Francis was handed a 20 years sentence for murder, five years for housebreaking and another five for theft.

The sentences will run concurrently.

Fortune was given five years for theft.

Eersterust station commander Lieutenant-Colonel John Kgoetego praised the investigating officer Constable Velyn Chauke for securing the convictions.

“We thank him for his hard work and for helping remove a now convicted murderer from our society,” he said.

He said that crimes against women and children would not be tolerated and that the sentence handed down by the court served to justify that.

Shibambo urged residents to assist the Gauteng police to fight fraud, corruption, unethical behaviour or any other suspicious activities that could be detrimental to their success.
