UPDATE: East learner earns full bursary for entire high school career

Amogelang Motileng (14) said he wanted one day to be able to support his mother and younger brother.

A Grade 7 Boikgantsho Primary School learner in Mamelodi East, who won two trophies for his performance at a maths Olympiad last year, has achieved again.

Amogelang Motileng (14) of Section 16, who won two trophies and certificates in the competition’s Circuit 5 level, scoring among the top learners in his grade in Mamelodi last year, has won a full bursary to study at Star College, a private school in Equestria, until he completes his matric.

He was offered a 100% bursary on Monday and a full school uniform donated by Ernest Gouws, coordinator of the Catch-up programme at the college where he will start Grade 8.

This comes after he passed an admission test in Maths, Science and English with flying colours.

However, his challenge is that he must buy his own stationery and pay for his own transport to school.

The principal of Boikgantsho Primary School, Vusi Khumalo, said he was excited for the boy, who is flying the school flag high.

He said the school was prepared to assist him with some of the stationery needed to start Grade 8 at Star College.

Khumalo said he was concerned about transport for the boy to get to school every day and pleaded with the community of Mamelodi to assist him as he comes from a disadvantaged family and is being raised by unemployed parents who cannot afford to pay for his transport.

His Maths teacher, Patronella Phasha, said Amogelang was a hard-working and committed learner.

She described him as someone who can think creatively and critically, and find solutions to solve problems.

“He always answers tricky questions in class and always helps his classmates,” she said.

Phasha pleaded with the public to assist the boy to go to the private school and pursue his dream of becoming a chartered accountant.

Amogelang thanked all the teachers who taught him at Boikgantsho Primary School since Grade 1 and said he would continue to make them proud and study hard.

He said he wanted one day to be able to support his mother and younger brother.

Phasha encouraged her colleagues to work hard and always guide learners with pride, honour and dignity.

“Learners need to be motivated. Once they are made to believe in themselves, they will be able to overcome the fear of Maths.

“The school is proud of the educator and the learners and wishes all of them the best and to keep up the good work.”
