St Mary’s pupils excel in 2018 exams

“Education is of course about much more than these results”

The St Mary’s Diocesan school for girls’ class of 2018 has been commended for its excellent pass rate.

School head Canon Paterson said all the learners passed, 97% with a bachelors degree pass, which entitles them to study a degree course at any university in South Africa.

The school racked up 173 distinctions with the top three learners being Milla Ottavini, Neha Pillay and Isabella Selzer who each obtained seven distinctions.

Milla Ottavini said she would be furthering her studies at the University of Stellenbosch by enrolling for a bachelor of accounting.

Her hobbies include public speaking, hockey and creative writing.

Neha Pillay said she would be pursuing medicine at the University of Cape Town. Her hobbies include painting, reading, playing hockey and yoga to de-stress.

Isabella Selzer said she was going to pursue BSc agri-animal science at the University of Pretoria as she has a love for animals and the great outdoors.

Her hobbies are reading, writing, squash and playing the piano.

Paterson said the class of 2018 had done superbly and deserved congratulations as do the educators who over 13 years prepared for this moment.

“Education is of course about much more than these results,” he said.

“Soft issues (which are actually hard issues) such as determination, resilience, courage, compassion, empathy and tolerance cannot be assessed in this way. These issues give meaning to the academic results as our ‘Daughters of the King’ go out and change the world,” said Paterson.
