VIDEO: Power in north restored after 36 hours

“The biggest cause of power outages is trees on private properties growing into and damaging overhead power lines.”

A power outage that lasted more than 36 hours in parts of Pretoria North was finally resolved on Monday.

Wolmer and Pretoria North residents reported the power failure at the weekend.

The areas’ ward councillor Yolanda Duvenage said “unforeseen complications” prevented Tshwane metro repair teams from restoring power supply sooner.

“The repair team working in the area was held up in Soshanguve,” Duvenage said.

“The community members refused to let the team leave until power was restored in the area, which meant that the other areas affected by power outages could not be attended to.”

Duvenage said the power failures in Burger Street and Wolmer were caused by tall trees that had damaged overhead power lines.

“Metro maintenance teams had already attended to most of the trees growing in the area,” she said.

“The problem we have now is that trees inside yards are not being maintained by the property owners.”

Duvenage said that property owners have to maintain their plants and trees to ensure that they do not damage municipal structures such as power lines.

Not only were residents in Pretoria North affected by the weekend’s power outages, but homeowners in the Moot also had to suffer the inconvenience of not having electricity.

Cable theft took its toll in some areas where power cables were cut.

One of the residents shared a video of a live power cable dangling over a busy street.
