Bushiri, wife in court over alleged fraud and money laundering

Several streets around the Pretoria Commercial Crimes Court will be affected.

The self-proclaimed prophet and prophetess couple arrested on charges of fraud and money laundering are set to make their first appearance in court on Monday.

Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary are to face an additional charge of contravention of the prevention of organised crime act. They were scheduled to appear in the Pretoria Commercial Crimes Court.

They were arrested on Friday in Rustenburg, North West by the Hawks.

“The crimes were committed from 2015,” spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.

It is understood the money laundered was to the amount of $1 147 200 USD (more than R16 million).

Meanwhile, a bunch of demonstrators gathered outside the court to show support for Bushiri, who they fondly refer to as “Papa” and “Major 1”.

Bushiri’s Enlightened Christian Gathering church also faces a charge of defeating the ends of justice after the removal of the bodies of the three victims of a stampede from the church without the relevant authorities being notified.

Tshwane metro police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said the following streets will be affected:

Visagie Street is closed between Thabo Sehume and Paul Kruger Street.

“Motorists are urged to use alternative roads,” he said.
