Foodie hub bustles with hundreds of patrons

From Argentinian grills to Austrian bakes, the Hazel Food & ACC Market brings a world of flavour to Pretoria – offering a vibrant alternative to the weekend’s sporting action while showcasing top-quality local and international fare.

The Hazel Food & ACC (Arts, Crafts, and Culture) Market offered shoppers a clash of international fixtures much different to the World Cup action this weekend, as hundreds partook in the beloved weekly market’s foods and crafts from different corners of the world.

Started in 2010 by owners Daniël Vos (ACC Market) and Gerrard Scholtz (Hazel Food Market), the market has been ongoing for 17 years, accommodating around 140 vendors every week.

One of the market managers, Jean-Pierre Verster says the stalls permitted at the market are very select, as they seek to bring attendees the very best without duplicates.

“The food side is nicely curated. A lot of shoppers do their weekly shopping here, so when they notice that they’re out of certain things during the week, they can come here and get them straight from the farmer. You’ve got chicken from the farmer here; you’ve got beef, lamb actually from Bronkhorstspruit; they come and sell here. You’ve got a great variety of countries: Argentinian food, Greek, Serbian; we’ve got an Austrian baker who makes the best brownies ever, Dutch and so forth,” Verster says.

Scholtz says he personally tests every sample vendors bring before it gets approved, because of the quality of the product.

“I think, firstly, the set-up, we’re smaller. We’re compact, and we’re a family. We also don’t allow two, three or four of the same product. When you come, whatever you find is top quality,” Scholtz says.

The Hazel Food & ACC Market looks forward to hosting the Royal Thai Embassy’s Taste of Thai, an authentic Thai street food market experience, where they bring Thai food vendors to the heart of Pretoria.
