Car boot shoppers in search of bargains

The Boot Sale was created to combat climate change, provide income opportunities, and offer preloved goods at low prices.

Having been around for nearly a decade, My Car Boot Sale is still drawing in consumers as hundreds flock to the unique weekly market in search of unique goods.

Halfway through the year, market founder Helga Roper says the vendors have been loving their new home at Som (South of Middle) Park, describing it as a product of community efforts.

“It’s fitting because the Car Boot Sale is about community, giving people the opportunity to get rid of their second-hand stuff by having it resold so that it doesn’t become waste. That’s our main mission,” Roper says.

“We have a passion for nature conservation; that’s why we do this. If it’s not re-owned, it ends up in the landfill.”

Roper says they want to educate people that buying second-hand is not only a financial advantage. They also gain great quality.

“Things that were made 30–40 years ago, in some cases 100 years ago, were made with integrity and good quality. The quick production and the fast fashion – it’s not the same anymore.

“So, to come here and buy something that has withstood the test of time is in itself already clever; when you’re buying it for a lot cheaper than if you bought it brand new, it becomes really clever,” Roper says.
