Onderstepoort landfill closure looms

The metro’s head of landfill site management, Frans Dekker, said sites in Ga-Rankuwa and Soshanguve had been identified as alternatives for Onderstepoort.

Uncertainty looms as the shutdown of the Onderstepoort landfill in Rosslyn begins at the end of the month.

At a recent public participation meeting, environmental consultant Ludwig Geldenhuys announced that the landfill would no longer take domestic waste from the end of the month and garden and building waste from the end of the year.

Onderstepoort follows in the footsteps of Garstkloof, Kwaggasrand and Temba landfill sites, which have already closed.

The metro’s head of landfill site management, Frans Dekker, said sites in Ga-Rankuwa and Soshanguve had been identified as alternatives for Onderstepoort.

He added the landfill site, which opened in 1997, was initially set to close in 2016, but its lifespan had been extended to the end of this year.

Local ward councillor, Marnette Sutherland said Enviro-Serv in Rosslyn and the Waste Group in Bon Accord were alternative private landfill sites.

It was suggested that once the landfill closed, the site should be used either as a recreational park or a multipurpose waste facility, or be rehabilitated.

Recyclers, however, are not pleased about the closure and have asked what would happen to them come the end of the year.
