Construction on an “illegal” building project in Eldoraigne has been halted on instructions of the Tshwane metro, according to the owner.
Mohamed Karin, who owns the property in Saxby Avenue, said the contract to build four townhouses on the site was handed over to the contractor before building plans could be approved.
“We have since halted the construction of the townhouses to await the approval of the metro for the construction. As soon as it is approved we will continue building.”

Karin denied reports there was the intention to construct 12 residential units on the property on the land that has been vacant for almost 10 years.
“During that time many in the area complained that nothing was being done. Now we are developing it and now they are complaining about the development.”
Karin said he was approached by political parties who expressed interest in the property.
“If the construction does not get approved we are strongly considering donating it to these parties to turn it into a free housing scheme for the underprivileged.”
Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo confirmed last month that a notice to cease construction was issued on the property.
He would not provide the reason why the metro deemed the construction illegal.
Neighbours together with local ward councillor Cindy Billson have raised concerns over the construction which they believed to be irregular.
“It appears as if no legal process was followed before the construction on the property started,” Billson said previously.
