The Tshwane metro has warned the public against alleged conmen operating at the Akasia licensing office.
In a statement, the metro cautioned residents against using the services of strangers who were not behind the counter at a designated service point.
This warning comes after an elderly couple were conned out of more than R2 000 at the licensing centre on Wednesday.
Magdeleen Oberholster said she and her husband paid the alleged conman R2 370 when he told them there were outstanding fines in her husband’s name after approaching them in the licensing centre’s parking area.

“He said he wouldn’t give us back the licence unless we paid the whole amount in cash.”
Oberholster said she and her husband then went to a nearby ATM to withdraw the money.
“When we gave him the money he gave us back the licence, but I refused to leave without seeing him pay the money in at the centre.”
She followed the alleged conman until he told her to wait outside a door, which she later found out was a bathroom.
Last month, an elderly Waverley couple almost fell victim to the same scam, but they decided to walk into the centre, in accordance with their appointment.
“People should report any person approaching them with the pretence that they are officials from the licensing centre,” said metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo.
Mashigo said none of the metro staff members operated outside their offices.
