Sometimes the police do not even have to go and look for arrests – especially when someone apparently driving under the influence crashes his car into the police station itself.
Police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach said Lyttelton police arrested a motorist yesterday after he crashed into detective’s offices with his Land Rover.
“At about 17:15 a Lyttelton Manor resident allegedly crashed into his gate at his home in Langebrink Road behind the Lyttelton police station.”

Weilbach said it was suspected that he passed out with his foot on the accelerator pedal.
“The vehicle picked up momentum and crashed through his wall into his neighbour’s yard and through his neighbour’s wall at the back.”
She said he drove over the busy Clifton Avenue while miraculously missing all oncoming traffic before crashing through the police station’s fence and right into some detective’s offices.
“Luckily no one was in the offices and no one was injured, including the driver.”
The detective’s buildings were, however, badly damaged.
“Dockets had to be removed to another safe building and some of the offices are without electricity as the power box was damaged.”
Weilbach said the middle-aged man will appear in court soon on drunk driving charges.
