The Mamelodi police has encouraged the public to report any criminal activity to the newly formed Mamelodi multi-task unit on a new toll-free number.
Police spokesperson Captain Johannes Maheso said calling on 082-771-1001, would activate the new multi-task unit announced by the minister of police.
He said Minister Bheki Cele announced the deployment of multi-task team, the crime combat and reaction team for Mamelodi, on 1 March as a response to meetings to enhance policing and community relations Cele had had with residents in Mamelodi recently.

“The community can report crimes such as unlicensed firearms, houses where drugs are sold, unlicensed liquor trading, disturbance of peace through loud music, suspected stolen vehicles and wanted suspects,” said Maheso adding tipsters could elect to be “anonymous”.
“Police would like to warn the public to avoid footpaths and isolated areas at all cost,” police spokesperson Captain Michael Mbewe as he advised pedestrians to avoid falling victim to robberies.
He identified the following as crime hotspots in the area: Solomon Mahlangu Drive next to Heatherly dumping site, the corner of Hinterland Avenue and Solomon Mahlangu Drive and the Phahameng Clinic.
In Mamelodi West, the police advised the public to take extra precaution when walking next to the Mamelodi hostel and behind the HM Pitje Stadium.
“Please keep a good relationship with the police and always work together with the police to keep the community safe,” concluded Maheso.
