A DA ward councillor has opened a case of assault after she was allegedly assaulted by about eight members of a self-proclaimed “business forum”.
Ward councillor Ina Strijdom was assaulted in Clubview where water pipes were being replaced on Monday, according to DA women’s network spokesperson Mpho Mehlape-Zimu.
“On arrival the councillor was told members of the ‘forum’ were demanding jobs and sub-contracts for their people.”
“While trying to engage with the group of men, she was viciously assaulted.”
Mehlape-Zimu said the ward councillor had no say in who was appointed to work on the project.
“[Such] workers are appointed by the Office of the Speaker according to the City of Tshwane lottery system. It is unacceptable that these so-called ‘business forums’ are trying to intimidate not only the councillor, but also the community liaison officer into giving them and their friends work.”

Strijdom has opened a case of assault, intimidation and crimen injuria at the Wierdabrug police station.
“We will be closely monitoring the progress of the SAPS investigation and ensure that all those found guilty face the full might of the law,” said Mehlape-Zimu.
“An attack on a female ward councillor is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated.”
Last week, two other Tshwane ward councillors in Centurion laid two separate criminal cases against each other, also at the Wierdaburg police station.
This after an apparent altercation between ward 48 councillor Kingsley Wakelin and ANC Tshwane spokesperson Lesego Makhubela.
Makhubela accused Wakelin of removing rival political parties’ election posters; while Wakelin denied the accusations, saying he was only removing “illegal” posters by local businesses.
