A Laudium crime prevention organisation has warned motorists to be vigilant in the face of an increase in the theft of car side mirrors in the past few weeks.
PAJ community patrollers have recorded four cases of stolen side mirrors in the last two weeks.
“The vehicles targeted tend to be more luxury models,” said spokesperson Prajay Ramjee.
He said around 15 cases were reported last year in the area.

“It quieted down for a few months then on 22 March we received the first report for the year. Since then we have had three more.”
Ramjee said the motive was unclear.
“We understand the mirrors are not sold at high prices,” he said.
“It is also difficult to determine when the crimes will take place. We have received reports of theft in the night and in broad daylight.”
Laudium police spokesperson Constable Simon Chokoe said cases of theft from a motor vehicle had been reported to the station.
“We are increasing our patrols in the area to keep a lookout for these kinds of crimes,” said Chokoe.
In the meantime, residents are urged to report any suspicious persons to the Laudium police.
“We also want to urge residents not to leave their vehicles parked outside their yards. Ideally, the best would be to park your vehicle in a locked garage to prevent falling victim to this crime.”
