16 arrested in the east at the weekend

The arrests were for various crimes in kidnapping, possession of drugs, theft, common assault, housebreaking and possession of stolen property.

Sixteen people were arrested in Mamelodi East police anti-crime operations at the weekend.

Spokesperson Captain Michael Mbewe said the arrests were for various crimes in kidnapping, possession of drugs, theft, common assault, housebreaking and possession of stolen property.

He said the suspects aged between 18 and 42 would appear in the Mamelodi Magistrate’s Court this week.

“We will continue with these weekend operations until Mamelodi becomes a crime-free zone,” he said.

He encouraged the public to use the recently announced crime, combat and reaction team 082-771-1001 toll-free number to report crimes.

The multitask team was officially launched by Police Minister Bheki Cele last month in response to the community’s call to improve policing and community relations in Mamelodi.

Mbewe said crimes such as unlicensed firearms, houses where drugs are sold, unlicensed liquor trading, disturbance of peace through loud music, suspected stolen vehicles and wanted suspects should be reported to the team.

“Tipsters can choose to be anonymous when reporting these crimes.”
