The police have made inroads to reduce property-related crimes in the last two months, a spokesperson has said.
Warrant Officer Michael Nel said the reduction of burglaries and theft out of motor vehicles was due to several recent operations but still felt these crimes could easily be prevented.
Nel said it was alarming how many people are still leaving valuable items like laptops, handbags, cellphones and briefcases in their vehicles despite warnings.

“It is also alarming to note how many people are leaving their entrances and security gates open, not only during the day but throughout the night.
“Entrances and security gates serve as a barrier between you and criminals; it allows you time to notify the police and activate the alarm before they can gain entry,” he said.
“Leaving entrances and security gates open will surely allow criminals to simply walk in to gain access to what would have been a well-secured property if the measures were implemented.”
He added that people parked vehicles on the sidewalk outside properties while ample space is available in the yard, behind locked gates.
Garsfontein SAPS station commander Colonel Kervin Solomons said: “Do not leave your valuables in your vehicle or park your vehicle outside the yard; it is bound to get stolen.”
He thanked the community for their dedication and efforts in helping the police fight crime.
“So far, our combined efforts have surely paid off. Let’s not let our guard down and afford criminals the opportunity to gain the upper hand and commit crime. Especially if we could have prevented it.”
Communities are urged to report any suspicious persons, vehicles or circumstances to the police immediately by phoning the 10111 emergency number.
