Moot residents were asked to write down the serial numbers of their gate motors.
“Sometimes the police retrieve stolen gate motors, but they do not know who they belong to because residents do not know what the serial numbers are,” said Kilnerpark Security spokesperson Ancelize van der Kooi.
Van der Kooi said the private security company received several complaints of theft and attempted theft of gate motors last week.
Villieria police has also warned residents of this spike in the crime.

“We are seeing a rise in this crime and urge residents to be vigilant,” she said.
She said a metal bracket with a proper lock was also a good way of securing a gate motor.
“It is very easy for a criminal to break a small lock,” she said.
“So make sure you have a proper and secure lock.”
Villieria police station spokesperson Captain Coba Brits urged victims to provide police relevant details when reporting thefts.
Information should include the date, time, type of fence around the premises, how entry onto the yard was gained, number of dogs on the premises and whether the motor was visible from the street.
Brits said residents should also supply the police with video footage, if any.
She said residents installing a gate motor should ensure it is new.

Van der Kooi said water-meter theft has also become a problem.
Kilnerpark Security also responded to a couple of other incidents last week.
On Sunday, a vehicle was stolen, but fortunately it was retrieved, Van der Kooi said.
“The vehicle was retrieved on the corner of Steve Biko Road and Hertzog Street after it was reported stolen in Gezina earlier,” she said.
On Friday, two vehicles were stolen in East Lynne and Queenswood.
Van der Kooi said on Thursday a resident in Nico Smith Street reported an attempted burglary.
“The resident said a person trespassed on his property and tried to steal his phone through a window,” she said.
She said a suspect was arrested in 26th Avenue for breaking into a house in 27th Avenue.
On Wednesday, another man was arrested in Talana Avenue for breaking open a gate motor to steal a bicycle in the yard.
