Poor roads and illegal dumping a problem in the north

“Waste materials are just dumped anywhere else where people feel like dumping."

Poor service delivery has become a way of life, according to Soshanguve residents who are angry about the lack of proper roads in the area.

Precious Sithole, a resident in Extension 10, said it was difficult to navigate the roads when it rained.

“We have been waiting for tar roads. After heavy rains, it gets muddy and water seems to take time to dry out. Cars struggle to drive around the gravel road and children and other residing community members in Extension 10 struggle to walk around due to the water that has filled up the streets,” said Sithole.

She also told Rekord that illegal dumping in the area was on the rise.

“Waste materials are just dumped anywhere else where people feel like dumping. The municipality comes every Tuesday to come and collect dustbins, but still it does not stop the pollution on the street corners,” said Sithole.

Another resident, Andiswa Matiwane, said they had not heard anything from the Tshwane metro regarding plans to improve the situation.

“We do not even know who our ward councillor is. There has not been any meetings held about the dumping and the tar road issues. I do not even know who to even approach. We have lost hope because there is no intervention in the community,” said Matiwane.

Rekord contacted the Soshanguve Extension 10 ward 29 councillor three times for comment. To date, he has not responded.

Metro spokesperson, Goitsemang Patronella Molaeng, said they had been waiting for the budget speech to see if funds would be allocated for the tar roads in Soshanguve, adding that “for now, we cannot say when projects will start”.

Extension 10 community resident, Andiswa Matiwane is concerned about the state of roads, especially during rainy season.
