The notorious Moloto “road of death” in the north of Pretoria should be urgently upgraded to prevent any further traffic accidents and loss of life.
This was according to a delegation of the DA’s provincial leadership, which visited the road on Thursday.
“There are two to three accidents every week, most of them fatal,” local ward councillor Johan Welmans told Rekord.

“Speed is a big problem here.”
Welmans said he received regular complaints from residents about the condition of the road as well as the number of accidents on it.
“Upgrades are urgent because about 60 000 people use the road each day,” said DA provincial roads and transport spokesperson Janho Engelbrecht.
“It’s well known that the road is dangerous. Human lives can’t be put on the back-burner,” he added.
Engelbrecht said the upgrade would be beneficial to the local community in other ways too.

“Upgrades will unlock the area’s economic potential as a large percentage of people are living in poverty in this area.”
He said there was also agricultural and touristic potential that could be unlocked if upgrades to the road were prioritised.
Provincial shadow finance and Kameeldrift east constituency head Adriana Randall agreed.

Randall said street lamps had to be installed to increase visibility at night when most accidents happened.
“We urgently need to upgrade this road,” Randall said.
