Soon the sloppy sidewalks in Rosslyn north of Pretoria will be a thing of the past.
Recently, a distraught business owner in the area contacted Rekord after the new sidewalks the municipality built in the area turned into a sloppy eyesore.
Meanwhile councillor Marnett Sutherland, confirmed the completion date of the pavement project as 16 July 2019.
“Although there is a lot of cleaning up to be done, the frustration has now [been] addressed,” Sutherland said.

Sutherland attended a meeting with several contractors involved in the project on 19 June 2019.
She explained that when the municipality approves a project such as this, 30% of the work (labour, tools, resources) must come from the community or the ward where the project takes place.
“Because the project is then split between several sub-contractors, it often happens that there is a delay in some stages in the project,” she said.
“Unfortunately it is one of the disadvantages of using many different sub-contractors.”
Sutherland further said there has been great frustration in the past with regard to the trucks that occupy and damage the sidewalks.
“There are also cement balls to be planted on the edges of the sidewalks to prevent this problem,” said Sutherland.

“The sidewalks are specifically there for pedestrians to walk on. The cement balls [are] to keep the trucks off the sidewalks.”
Since the project was launched last year, a length of 7.5 kilometres of new sidewalks was built to date in the area.
New sidewalks built are as follows: Kitshof Street (1.7km), Piet Rautenbach Street (1.6 km), Piet Pretorius Street (700m), Frans du Toit Street (1.3km), Kotzenberg Street (900m), De Waal introduced street (700m), MA du Plessis Street (200m), Johan Uys Street (140m) and Pepler Street (200m).
Sutherland concluded the new pavement project must be completed by 16 July, otherwise the contractors could face a fierce fine.
