Pta dams in a ‘healthy state’

This was despite the province’s temperatures gradually plummeting to freezing conditions.

Dam levels in Gauteng remained in “a healthy state” this week, despite the province’s temperatures gradually plummeting to freezing, the department of water and sanitation said.

Ngcobo Khulekani of the department said dam levels were at 94,4 percent this week.

“This indicates a slight decline during the same time last year, when the levels stood at 94,9 percent,” he said.

According to Khulekani, almost all the dams in the province were in a good state as some were at above 100 percent – the full capacity mark.

“Others are edging close to impressive levels,” he said.

Khulekani said the Bon Accord dam this week was recorded 101.8 percent full, defying the effects of winter season when dams experienced shrinking levels.

He said this dam was currently at the same level as last year at the same period.

Khulekani said the Bronkhorstspruit dam has shown a slight drop from last week’s levels, moving from 88,9 percent last week, to 87,7 percent this week.

“The dam stood at 100,5 percent in the same week last year,” he said.

Recording an upsurge from 99,4 percent last week, to 99,7 percent this week, Rietvlei dam was among some of the dams that have remained steady over a number of months, Khulekani said.

“The present levels of the dam are nearly the 100 percent,” he said.

He said similarly comfortable this week, was the Roodeplaat dam which was currently hovering at 99,1 percent and slightly higher than last week’s 99,0 percent.

“The dam ranks among those that have remained stable up to now,” he said.

Despite the good news, the department still urged users to be cautious with the use of water during the winter season.

“As Gauteng is feeling the impact of winter, the department is urging water consumers in the province to be careful in their water use as the next rainfalls are expected to only return in a few months from now,” he said.
