UPDATE: HRC demand justice for Maseko family
“The clinic has two nurses on duty at the maternity ward and they don’t have any proper filing system.”
A Human Rights Commission (HRC) delegation today visited the woman who had to give birth right outside a clinic when nurses allegedly turned her away for being “too old” to be pregnant.
He also visited the Stanza Bopape clinic 1 where she was turned away as well as the woman’s family.
Buang Jones of the HRC, said the clinic faced many challenges.
“The health facility is too small and the maternity ward has only eight beds,” he said.
“They can’t cope with the rise in demand for health care services and there are critical staff shortages at the clinic.”
“The clinic has two nurses on duty at the maternity ward and they don’t have any administrative support and a proper filing system.”
During his visit, Jones spoke with staff about their daily problems at the clinic.
He also talked to patients about their issues.

Elina Maseko (47) was reportedly turned away last Sunday by two nurses because she was “too old to be pregnant” and therefore a “high risk”.
Maseko’s family complained to Jones that the nurses on duty did not have any name tags.
Sibongile Morudu, who helped her aunt give birth at the clinic’s front door, said police told her they can’t investigate the incident because “there is no case”.
Maseko said she was traumatised by the incident.
She further demanded the nurses in question be fired.
Jones promised he would do anything in his powers to make sure that justice is served.
Bobby Mohanoe, chairperson for the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC), said he blamed the unions representing health practitioners.
“Health practitioners are protected by the unions and that’s why their rude attitude won’t change towards patients.”
He said they are going to call a meeting with the unions to discuss the matter with them.
The HRC was accompanied by #Notinmyname and Mamelodi Treatment Action Campaign branch.
