WARNING GRAPHIC VIDEO: West woman traumatised as dog is shot

“I remember that the man still told me to calm down because he was apparently the owner of the dog."

A woman from the west of Pretoria was still traumatised after she saw how another dog got shot in her driveway last week.

“I still hear the gunshot in my mind sometimes,” said Daspoort resident Charmaine Kruger.

She said the incident happened last Tuesday in Van Riebeeck Street.

“It was a normal day and I was sitting in my living room with my daughter, who was on the corner couch,” she said.

Kruger explained that they had two gates in their driveway.

“One gate is connected to our house, which is closed to keep the dogs inside,” she said.

“We also have a second gate at the entrance of the driveway.”

She said the gate at the entrance of the driveway was open last Tuesday.

“Just before the incident, I heard our dogs barking continuously,” she said.

“When I checked, I saw a dog on the outside of the gate fighting with my dogs.”

She said it was a black and white Pit Bull terrier.

However, Kruger added that it was nothing serious and none of the dogs got injured.

“Suddenly, three bakkies pulled over, with plus-minus seven people, and a man comes into my driveway and shoots the dog in front of me,” she said.

“Another man then approaches, kicks the dog and then drags him away.”

“I remember that the man still told me to calm down because he was apparently the owner of the dog, but everything happened very fast.”

On the video footage shared with Rekord, the injured dog is seen wagging his tail after he was shot.

“The fact that the dog laid on his back and wagged his tail after he was shot, shows a sign of submission,” said Tim Surman of Scar Second Chance animal rescue.

He said the dog was not immediately dead after he was shot.

“Which means that it was left in pain,” he said.

Surman said Scar got on board to assist in the investigation.

“Legally, we have the same rights as a normal citizen, but we are trying to assist the police to track the perpetrators down,” he said.

“The police already have their hands full with regular cases so we try to help where we can.”

He said Scar also assisted in getting therapy treatment for Kruger after the incident.

“This whole ordeal has left me traumatised,” she said.

Blood stains after the dog was shot.

“What if the bullet ricocheted and hit my daughter? It could have been one of my dogs that was shot.”

Hercules police spokesperson, Captain Bonginkosi Msimango, confirmed that a case was opened with the police.

“The police are investigating a case of the discharge of a firearm and malicious damage to property,” he said.

Msimango said no one had been arrested so far.

“We are continuing with the investigations,” he said.

Tshwane SPCA spokesperson, Elsa Daniels said nothing had been reported at the SPCA.
