A household in 33rd Avenue Villieria got a nasty surprise when a car smashed through their garden wall and only came to a halt when it crashed into a tree on their property last Sunday.
It was the second such accident in the same street over the past month.
“This is really getting out of hand now,” said neighbour Bianca Pieterse.
“Next, it could be a child that is hit this way.”

Pieterse said the incident happened in the afternoon around 17:00.
She said the previous such accident was on 29 June.
She said the vehicle crashed right through the resident’s security gate.

“The person in the vehicle was actually lucky to be alive,” she said.

Another resident, Ewoud van Jaarsveld, agreed that speed in the street was a problem.
“Apart from safety, the vehicles also make a lot of noise in the late hours of the night or early morning,” he said.
Pieterse suggested setting up a speed bump in the street.
Local ward councilor, Frans Smith added, however, that it was a lengthy process to apply for a speed hump in a street.

He told Rekord he was aware of the problem.
“The problem is that a speed hump’s location must also be approved by other residents,” he said.
He said a speed hump costs about R1 000.
“There are many other applications already on the waiting list.”
The Tshwane metro police could not comment at the time of going to press.
