East police secure heavy sentences

Brooklyn police have welcomed the heavy sentences, handed down by the Hatfield Community Court to shoplifting, theft and fraud offenders.

Spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach said in most recent court cases suspects were sentenced to a total of 23 years imprisonment on six different cases.

Ioina Nkosi (30) was sentenced to three years direct imprisonment after she stole clothing from a clothing store in Brooklyn Mall.

Marry Sibanda (26) and Langaelihle Ncube (36) were sentenced to six months and three years’ imprisonment respectively for stealing butter from a store in Cherry lane.

Both were declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Sbonelo Khuzwayo (30) was sentenced to six years imprisonment for stealing perfume worth more than R18 000 from a store in Menlyn Park Shopping Center.

A security guard, Banele Simelane (18) was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment after he stole a cellphone and uniform.

Another security guard, Rodney Ramalatu (30) was sentenced to three years imprisonment for stealing a computer from Pearson Institute.

Mandla Gumede (29) was also sentenced to six years imprisonment for buying a cellphone from a clothing store in Brooklyn Mall with a fraudulent credit card.

Weilbach said Brooklyn detectives Sergeant Samuel Mphahlele, Constable Christopher Ndwamato and Constable Romeo Mohlala investigated the cases.

Brooklyn station commander Brigadier Kushie Pietersen, congratulated the detectives for their sterling work and meticulous investigation.

“These sentences are an indication that the courts and the SAPS regard all crime in a serious light.”

“As a result, Brooklyn SAPS experienced a reduction in fraud, theft and shoplifting during the month of June,” said Pietersen.
