‘Eersterust now a dumpsite’
“If the metro cleans up the area today, the next day it will already look like it was never cleaned.”
Eersterust residents say their entire neighbourhood has been turned into one giant dumpsite because of “out of control” illegal dumping in the area.
CPF chairperson Henry Godfrey said there were several illegal dumping hot spots in the residential area.
“It does not even help that the metro assists in cleaning up the area because the next day it will look exactly the same again,” he said.
He said better measures should be put in place to stop the dumpers.

“A proper fence should be erected wherever possible,” he said.
“However, it cannot be palisaded because then the criminals will simply steal it – the situation is quite frustrating and very much out of control.
“They even steal newly planted trees. It’s ridiculous.”
Godfrey said one such hot spot was on the corner of Good Shepherd Street and Roots Avenue.
“This is a typical example of a field that has been turned into an illegal dumping hot spot,” said Godfrey, who lives across the street from the field.
“It could have been used for much better purposes, such as transforming it into a park for youngsters to play in.”
He said other public spots have also become illegal dumping spots.
“Our local cemetery looks terrible and is constantly scattered with rubbish,” he said.

“The route on the way to the reservoir is also in a terrible state. People are also dumping illegally right in front of the clinic.”
Godfrey said the road to the Waltloo train station was filthy.
“Building rubble and garbage are dumped almost daily,” he said.
“Not only is it an eyesore to commuters, but also smells terrible.”
Adding to the problem was a sewage leakage which has been oozing for months now, Godfrey said.
He said PS Fourie Drive and Carl Davies Avenue were also spots for illegal dumping.
“Something needs to be done urgently because we cannot go on like this anymore,” he said.
“Eersterust used to be such a beautiful residential area in its prime, but now it has become a big dumpsite.”
Resident and former ward councillor Winston Campbell agreed Eersterust was systematically being transformed into a dumping site.
Tshwane metro urged residents to report any illegal dumping to metro police.
