UPDATE: Escaped suspect apprehended
Housebreaking and theft escapee arrested after two weeks on the run.
The power of the media in the fight against crime came to the fore recently, when a fugitive from the law was nabbed following a tip-off from a reader.
An avid Rekord reader in Mamelodi had just received a copy of his favourite newspaper last Friday when he noticed an article about a suspect who had escaped police custody.
Bobo Derrick Mashilo, commonly known as “Bobbejaan”, escaped police custody on 12 July. He had earlier been arrested for housebreaking and theft.

After reading the article, the reader immediately informed the police who reacted with speed.
They arrested the 27-year-old suspect on the same day in Mamelodi section SNS.
Police spokesperson Captain Johannes Maheso said he was happy with the response the police received from the public.
Maheso said a charge of escaping lawful custody had been added to the charges against the suspect.
He said the suspect had given the police a wrong name during his first arrest.
Maheso pleaded with the public to continue working with the police in the fight against crime.
He said Mashilo had been on the run for almost two weeks.
