UPDATE: Mams family demands justice for son

“I am not happy with how the police handled the case.”

The family of the man fighting for his life at the Mamelodi Day hospital after a woman allegedly threw acid at him wants justice.

Terence Noah Mabena (31) of Mamelodi East, Section 16 suffered acid burns to his face and upper body when a woman allegedly threw acid at him during a fight in the early hours of June 29.

Mabena’s mother Grace Dudu Mabena said the justice system was failing him because “while he was stuck to a bed in the hospital after the incident, she was walking the streets freely”.

Dudu demanded to know how long it took for the court to decide on the case once the statements were taken.

She said the suspect was arrested, appeared in court but was later released.

“Today she is walking freely in the streets of Mamelodi, while my son is fighting for his life and getting worse every day,” she said.

Terence said he and the woman were both drunk on the night and got into an argument before she allegedly threw the acid at him.

He said he cannot remember what the fight was about but “…the arguing had never escalated to violence”.

Dudu said it had been more than a month since the incident but the justice system was unable to make an arrest.

Mamelodi East police spokesperson Sergeant Mabel Sibanda said the docket was taken to the prosecutors for their decision.

Dudu said Terence was served a protection order while he was fighting for his life in hospital.

“How could he harass her while fighting for his life in hospital. I am not sure if he will be discharged before his court appearance.”

She said she suspected the woman might have bribed the police.

The police said they were investigating a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
