Tshwane derby kicks off new PSL season

Pretoria football fanatics are urged to get tickets to experience the anticipated titanic clash between Sundowns and SuperSport.

The new Premier Soccer League (PSL) season kicks off this weekend with a massive Tshwane derby.

Current Absa Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns face rivals SuperSport United at the Lucas Moripe stadium in Atteridgeville on Saturday afternoon.

Pretoria football fanatics have been urged to get tickets to experience the anticipated titanic clash.

Between the two teams, SuperSport look more prepared and sharper having impressed in their pre-season friendly games.

Kaitano Tembo’s side has boosted their attack, signing Kudakwashe Mahachi and Thamsanqa Gabuza from Orlando Pirates while Downs only made one signing in the off-season.

The last time the two teams met was back in April where United claimed a 2-0 win.

Despite claiming bragging rights in the last derby, United eventually finished 6th and trophyless last season.

Sundowns finished as champions despite stiff competition from Orlando Pirates. The team’s pre-season preparations held in Nelspruit, Botswana and Zambia, did not go too well and coach Pitso Mosimane has said that his side was not ready to kick off the new season.

“I do not like this match because it comes at a wrong time for us, we are not ready,” said Mosimane.

“When we played SuperSport last year it was just after returning from a Champions League match in Egypt and we lost 2-0.”

Downs have a few injury worries including: Gaston Sirino, Emiliano Tade and new signing Mauricio Affonso. They are doubtful to face their Pretoria neighbours on Saturday.

“Sirino has a quad (injury). It’s giving him problems. We have Emiliano Tade who got a knock on the knee when we played against TS Sporting and Mauricio has an ankle (injury),” said Mosimane.

“He was trying to shoot, but I like to take them to those places, the pitches are not good. I know why I take them there and that’s what you get when you take those players to those conditions. But it’s not serious injuries,” he said.

In other PSL games, Pirates host Bloemfontein Celtic on Saturday at Orlando stadium while Kaizer Chiefs travel to Makhulong stadium to face Highlands Park on Sunday afternoon.
