Department investigates Eersterust child’s death at state hospital

The Tshwane District hospital in the Moot is investigating a mother’s claim that her two-year-old daughter died in her arms while she waited for service.

Rekord reported last week that the Jan Niemand Park mother, Kleeshay Stuurman, alleged that she had to wait for nine hours with her daughter, Zoedene before doctors assisted her last Tuesday, said family spokesperson Virginia Keppler.

“The department is aware of the incident,” said hospital spokesperson Zandile Mthimunye.

“We will investigate circumstances pertaining to this incident.”

It is believed that the toddler, who was first assessed by a doctor at the Eersterust clinic before going to the hospital, had a collapsed lung.

The doctors then immediately placed her on oxygen while contacting the hospital and an ambulance, informing them of the emergency.

“The mother followed the rules – she first took her daughter to her local clinic, upon which she was referred to the hospital,” Keppler said.

“Why did she have to wait nine hours to be assisted? This is completely unacceptable.”

A memorial service was held on Friday to bid farewell to Zoedene.

She will be cremated later this week.
