UPDATE: Gauteng ‘left out’ of Moloto road upgrades

"His department has not yet made any plans nor commitments."

Gauteng province has apparently been left out of the multi-billion rand budget allocated to upgrading the Moloto road.

This after Gauteng roads and transport department spokesperson Theo Nkonki said the upgrades for the road were “in planning and design”.

But DA roads and transport spokesperson Janho Engelbrecht claimed the department’s MEC Jacob Mamabolo had “misled the masses about the upgrades being a priority”.

A budget allocation of about R5,7-billion has been made for the Mpumalanga and Limpopo sections of the Moloto road (R573) network for the 2019/2020 cycle.

“According to the MEC, his department has not yet made any plans nor commitments with regards to the Moloto road upgrades,” Engelbrecht said.

Engelbrecht said Mamabolo’s alleged lack of action “showed they don’t care about the lives of our people”.

Nkonki said the MEC was still assessing the Gauteng transport network and prioritising needs and costs.

“When this exercise is completed he will decide on road improvements, including the Gauteng portion of the Moloto road.”
