UPDATE: West water cut might continue for days

The reservoir is draining water slowly because of acts of vandalism that prevent the water from being drained fast enough.

Residents of Pretoria West might be without water for days to come as plumbers and technicians battle with a broken valve at the Iscor reservoir.

Ward councillor James Ndlovu said there were more delays to the repair owing to the slow pace at which the reservoir was draining water.

“The reservoir is draining water slowly because of acts of vandalism that prevent the water from being drained fast enough,” he said.

Ndlovu said the lever to the valve that is used to open and drain the reservoir was found to have been vandalised.

Water supply was shut down, leading to residents being without water for the past three days.

“And it might take more days to empty it,” Ndlovu said.

“The repair work also still needs to be done.”

The reservoir is said to have a capacity of 10 million litres water and one million litres were still left before it is completely drained.

Ndlovu said technicians were working tirelessly to deal with the repairs.

“We have also been working hard distributing water street by street and trying to ensure that our residents have some water supply.”

He said some members of the community had visited the area to witness some of the work being done.

“We will make sure we keep residents informed on the progress being made.”

The repair work period will depend on how quickly the reservoir is emptied.

Roaming tankers have been arranged to supply consumers in the affected areas with water.

The following areas are affected by the interruption:

  • Pretoria Industrial
  • West Park
  • Kwaggasrand
  • Proclamation Hill
