Upgrade to alleviate congestion at east intersection
The long overdue upgrade of the Atterbury and DeVilla Bois Mareuil intersection is finally underway.
The long-overdue upgrade of the Atterbury and De Villa Bois Mareuil intersection has begun and is expected to be completed by the end of the month.
Roads and transport MMC Sheila Lynn Senkubuge said the upgrade would alleviate traffic congestion in the area.
“The installation of signals re-restarted on 19 August, while the paving of the sidewalks has been in progress.”
On the reasons for the delay, Senkubuge said the project had experienced “unforeseen internal challenges” which unfortunately hindered progress.

“Mitigation measures have been taken with the internal teams involved to fast track the project.”
“In the meantime, measures to make sure that the excavations are protected have been put in place.”
“A communication has been issued out to the teams involved in the project to adhere to safety precaution and their safety plans to avoid any safety hazards and accidents that may occur on-site.”
According to Senkubuge the overall construction was about 85 percent complete and projected to end 30 August.
“These traffic lights and upgrade are long overdue,” said chairperson of roads and transport councillor Elmarie Linde.
“We had to budget for it and this financial year we are very grateful that we can now install it as it will alleviate a lot of congestion and lead to fewer accidents on the road.”
