UPDATE: Accident witnesses asked to come forward

Kayla Burger (24) from Capital Park died after a bus collided with her vehicle in May.

A Moot family has asked anyone who might have witnessed a traffic accident in which their daughter died to please contact them.

Kayla Burger (24) from Capital Park died after a bus collided with her vehicle on the corner of Steve Biko and Soutpansberg roads in May this year.

The accident was about five kilometres from her home.

Burger was rushed to hospital but died there a few days later.

“There is not much evidence in the case at the moment and no eyewitnesses have come forward,” Kayla’s mother, Elmien, said.

“Which is why we plead with anyone who saw the accident to please come forward and help us to bring the guilty to justice.”

Since Kayla’s death, friends and family have been struggling to cope.

“Only this morning, I came across some of Kayla’s marriage photo albums,” Elmien said on Tuesday.

“The whole morning turned into an emotional one.”

Many people have also paid tribute to Kayla.

One such tribute was an initiative to donate dog and cat food to animal shelters started by her cousin and best friend, Alicia du Preez.

Her Play Rewind Paws initiative made its first donation earlier in August.

“Kayla was very passionate about animals – she would be late for class if it meant that she could rescue a stray in need,” Alicia said.

“I had never been to Wollies before Kayla took me there – she was so full of smiles and laughter when she was around animals.”

Alicia said she planned a second fundraiser through the initiative, with the handover taking place on 12 October.

A second accident at the same intersection recently only opened up old wounds, Elmien said.

“It was exactly the same circumstances as the accident with my daughter,” she said.

“The vehicle was hit on the exact same spot.”

Züné Voster, from the east of Pretoria, died when her car and a bus collided more than a week ago.

Vorster sustained head injuries and was declared dead on the scene.

Her brother, Dawie Keyser, said before his sister left the house on the morning of the accident, she had come into his room to say goodbye, something she had never done before.

“We were close and shared a lot,” he said.

Vorster was an award-winning sales representative.

“Four years in a row she won the best sales rep at a company she worked for. We were so proud of her,” her brother said.

Vorster was hardly in her new job for two months when she died.

Keyser said the area needed designated lanes for buses to avoid such accidents.

“Buses should have their own lanes, so the area can be better managed,” he said.
