UPDATE: ‘Escape aiding cop’ out on bail

The police officer is accused of assisting an alleged serial rapist escape from lawful custody.

The court orderly accused of assisting an awaiting trial prisoner escape from police custody was granted bail this week.

Samuel Mokoena (53) was released on R3 000 bail by the Pretoria North Magistrate Court on Wednesday.

It was Mokoena’s second appearance following his arrest last week on charges of defeating the ends of justice and aiding and abetting the escape of alleged serial rapist Clement Mahlangu.

It was understood Mahlangu escaped while being transported from the court, where he appeared on a charge of rape, to the Kgosi Mampuru prison in a vehicle driven by Mokoena.
