Women celebrated at events in Pretoria

The event was hosted by People Against Abuse organisation, based in Eersterust, on Friday and aimed to honour women that have been affected by domestic violence and sexual assault.

An event to honour women affected by domestic violence and sexual assault was held in the Moot recently.

The event was hosted by People Against Abuse organisation based in Eersterust to honour women who have been abused, said spokesperson Atlegang Moeketsi.

The event kicked off at the Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church and the organisation worked together with the different stakeholders around the community, including Future Families, Moses Mabhida Foundation, National Youth Development Outreach, Teen Challenge and COSUP.

People Against Abuse is a non-profit victim empowerment centre that deals with victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

“It is a 24-hour centre at Eersterust police station offering counselling, assistance for victims to open cases at the charge office, moral support during court trials and clinic visits. We refer clients to relevant stakeholders around the community,” she said.

Moeketsi said women in Eersterust mostly remained in relationships where they were being physically, emotionally, financially and sexually abused, were comfortable in the hands of their abusers and made up excuses for them.

“Therefore, we are hoping to give hope to those who are affected and inform them that there is no excuse for abuse,” said Moeketsi adding that the day was a success. “We are hoping it made a difference.”

People Against Abuse chairperson Thuleleni Mzamane said the event was to “educate women what steps to take if they find themselves in a situation where they have nowhere to go when they have been abused sexually or domestically and empower them and children who have been affected by domestic violence and sexual assault”.

The attendees were told to “break the silence of abuse before the silence breaks you”.

Motivational speaker Reneilwe Mphahlele, who suffered severe injuries during her domestic abuse ordeal, told the guests that she kept a knife on her and that she might lose her life if it were removed.

At a similar event east of Pretoria, on Saturday many gathered to remember the beloved Jo-Anita Schultz who was shot dead on Women’s Day by her husband in an apparent murder-suicide.

Pixie Terblanche, owner and manager of Pixie Pink Warrior Queen, an upliftment programme for female victims of domestic abuse hosted a ladies’ morning at the Roof Top Café to honour Shultz.

“Jo-Anita was a wonderful person murdered at the hands of her own husband,” said Terblanche.
