Budding maths genius puts east school on the map

She thanked both the parents for being supportive in their child and allowing him to have extra classes and taking part in his school work.

A grade 4 learner at Boikgantsho Primary School in Mamelodi East has been awarded for being among the best at mathematics in Tshwane.

Itumeleng Ledwaba (9) from Mamelodi East won a trophy and two certificates for his performance in the district Tshwane south maths olympiad in circuit 5 category B for 2019.

He was a top learner in Mamelodi and went on to represent Mamelodi in the district and won the problem solving, mental maths and overall excellence in maths categories.

His grade 4 mathematics educator Patronella Phasha described Itumeleng as a hardworking and committed learner.

She thanked both his parents for being supportive of their child and allowing him extra maths classes and as well as playing a role in his school work.

“Itumeleng is able to think creatively and critically, find solutions to problems, take responsibility for his own learning and create a positive learning environment for himself,” Phasha said encouraging other teachers to work hard with their learners.

“As teachers, we need to give the learners the best we have and the best will come to us.”

Itumeleng said he was happy with his performance and would continue to work hard to achieve more of his goals, including being in the law enforcement environment in future.

School principal Vusi Khumalo said learners needed to be motivated “and once they are made to believe in themselves, they will be able to overcome their fears in life”.

“It is a great pleasure for the school to have such a great teacher and HOD in the mathematics, natural sciences and technology department.”

He was also proud of Itumeleng for putting the name of the school on the map and hoped he would do better at the provincial level.

“The school is proud of the educator and the learners and we wish them all the best. They must continue to keep up the good work,” he said.
