NEWSFLASH: Warnings of possible taxi protest trouble in Pretoria
Just before 07:00 on Monday morning no roads were affected as yet.
Despite yet another warning of possible traffic disruptions due to a potential strike, roads in Tshwane were running smoothly early on Monday morning.
All roads except for Petroleum Street in Waltloo which was affected by a bakery worker strike, according to acting Tshwane roads and transport MMC alderman Karen Meyer.
Meyer, who is also MMC for community safety, on Monday said the metro had learnt of further possible disruptions across the metro’s roads by individual taxi drivers.
“The decision by the taxi operators to embark on protest action was allegedly taken at the funeral service for slain taxi driver Jabu Baloyi on Sunday in Soshanguve,” she said.
This after warnings a proposed nation-wide truck strike might also start this week.
“This is in addition to the threatened strike and protest action by truck drivers that may be experienced across the country,” said Meyer.
“Should the intended protest action proceed, it is likely that the entire metro will be affected.”
She said possible risk areas in the city included the Menlyn area and the Pretoria CBD, with Sunnyside expected to be at the centre of disruptions.
Meyer said local, provincial and national spheres of government were aware of the potential disruptions and would continuously engage with the various stakeholders in the transport sectors.
“Law enforcement agencies are also monitoring the situation and are prepared.”
Meyer said the metro called on taxi owners and associations to engage with their drivers and ensure orderly business operations.
