Sosh charity donates comfort packs to local school

Riakona donated sanitary towels and roll-on deodorant to learners at Mathaga primary school in Soshanguve Block L on Saturday.

Learners at Mathaga Primary School in Soshanguve now have no reason to miss school after a donation of comfort packs for girls.

Ambani Nngidi, founder of Riakona projects donated more than 800 sanitary pads and 500 toiletry packs to assist disadvantaged learners.

Nngidi told Rekord though she founded her organisation in 2014, this was her first outreach.

“Lack of sanitary towels does not only affect learners’ attendance at school, but also the economic development of the communities. The main aim of starting this project is because when I visited this school, I would see many girls struggling when they are on their periods. So I thought to myself that I should help them to never miss school because of periods,” said Nngidi.

Principal Stephen Vhulahani said his school was lucky to have benefited from the project.

“We appreciate what Riakona has done for our learners because some of the learners do not afford to buy sanitary towels and basic toiletries since they are from poverty-stricken families. This donation will contribute to bettering the lives of our learners,” said Vhulahani.

Parent Linah Ramadivhana said the project also taught the learners the importance of giving back to their communities.

“We as parents see this as a restoration of dignity to the recipients as well as the community at large. It is a good time for our children to follow the good steps from good people like Ambani Ngidi, so that they will do the same for the coming generation,” said Ramadivhana.

Grade five learner Mafhumudzi Madilonga (10) said: “We are grateful for the donations that came from Riakona project. They have helped us a lot because there is no dignity without basic necessity such as sanitary towels.”
