Following a two day closure of the Daspoort tunnel earlier this month, maintenance would now continue on Sunday.
The maintenance was to replace the 85 lights on the roof of the tunnel with brighter LED lights.
It was expected that the lights would be replaced in two days, but only 20 had been replaced, said local ward councillor Frik van Wyk.
“It is a very slower process than we initially thought,” Van Wyk said.

He said the maintenance would continue on Sunday, 29 September, “and the tunnel will be closed from 07:h00 to 18:00”.
“It is still unclear how many Sundays would be used to finish the maintenance,” he said.
“It will definitely take more than one.”
Although the project was taking longer than expected, Van Wyk said he was grateful that it was being done.

“I am getting very positive feedback from residents already about the change,” he said.
“The lights have been a yearlong problem.”
The replacement came as a relief to locals following the fatal attack on a woman at the tunnel about three weeks ago.
Many residents blamed the attack on the bad lighting in and outside the tunnel.
