AfriForum’s Moot branch tars patch of sidewalk used by vagrants

A patch of sidewalk in the Moot used by vagrants for public drinking was cleared and re-tarred by a local neighbourhood watch and other interested parties this week.

A patch of sidewalk in the Moot used by vagrants for public drinking was cleared and re-tarred by a local neighbourhood watch and other interested parties this week.

The re-tarring and clearing of shrubs were done by AfriForum’s Moot neighbourhood watch with the Riviera Home Owners, Residents and Business Organisation (Rhibo), last Friday.

The newly-tarred piece of land is on the corner of Annie Botha Avenue and Viljoen Street in Riviera, said AfriForum’s spokesperson, Carina Bester.

This comes after the branch recently received numerous complaints about people using alcohol on the streets.

The action was part of AfriForum’s #OnsDorp campaign.

Residents also helped remove shrubs where vagrants hid and used alcohol.

The piece of land can now be used for parking.

According to Werner Schultz, chairman of AfriForum’s Moot neighbourhood watch, residents and business owners in that area were extremely positive about this initiative.

“The residents and owners are very grateful as the people who usually drank alcohol there have now moved to another area,” he said.

The neighbourhood watch has also recently increased visibility in the area to discourage public drinking.

According to Schultz, AfriForum will continue to drive similar actions in the community.

“People who use alcohol on the streets attract other problems to the area that negatively impact community safety and well-being,” he said.

“We no longer want these kinds of problems in our area and we want to tackle them.”

He said they would continue to take similar actions in collaboration with other agencies.

“This is just one of many problems we will tackle and we would like to invite the community to join us,” he said.
